PROBLEM BOOK OVERVIEW

The Problem

The advent of publicly available generative AI tools has the potential to fundamentally alter how education operates. While there is clear scope for substantially enhancing learning and the ways how students can access and process information, there is a risk of unethical use of AI tools for summative assessments such as coursework reports and dissertation theses, with detrimental effects on the accuracy of student results and individual learning. While this is true for virtually any subject area, the domain of cyber security is presented with specific implications due to its fast pace and the fact that AI-retrieved knowledge cannot always easily be certified as factually correct.

Who are the principal stakeholders of this project?

  • Lecturers, Teachers, Instructors

  • Students

What are principal aims of this problem book?

The overarching aim of this problem book is to assess, analyse and mitigate threats in the context of AI-supported learning in the cyber security domain. Furthermore, an evaluative understanding of related opportunities for postgraduate assessment will be gained to provide guidance for students and instructors towards the ethical use of AI-supported learning within a cyber security course.

What are the indicative objectives of this project?

  • To create an up-to-date taxonomy of recent findings in the literature on AI-enhanced learning.

  • To explore and deploy current existing AI tools and to conduct a critical review of their capabilities for providing accurate cyber knowledge.

  • To run and evaluate an anonymous survey of current student practices for AI-enhanced learning based on student engagement with selected UK cyber security courses.

  • To create a framework for the ethical use of AI in assessment for students and instructors in a cyber security course.

What are the anticipated outputs and outcomes of this project?

  • A report detailing the findings of the investigation.

  • A student guidance template that can be used and adapted by other institutions and instructors.

  • A public website, hosting the created guidance information.
